Speedy Gonzales

Gosh- trying to keep up with this boyo is hard at the best of times! So, you can imagine that I have been finding it increasingly difficult to take a good portrait of him. My idea of a good portrait include the following points: 1/ Sharp 2/ Interestingly composed 3/ A smile (or at least engaged with the camera.)
Sometimes I have to content myself with 2 out of the 3. It's a rare shoot that I can pin them all. A lot of it has to do with only having natural light to work with. I have to use a low shutter speed with a high speed child! And now he's walking he has ran from one side of the backdrop to the other before I can even press the shutter release!

In the top photo, I attempted to try something new with something old. I placed some large yellow pages on top of my green backdrop. As it turns out, the colours really didn't work well together, but I like the photo in black and white. I have added some other portraits I have snapped of Jack recently, including some bubble bursting fun, which, (honestly) might definitely involve some photshop trickery again. I was just trying to snazz up an otherwise plain shot. Don't be cross. K?

  5. these look great. I definitely understand your dilemma. I have a 17 month old girl who started walking at 10 months, and since then getting a good picture of her is about having luck that day lol

  8. I think these are the best photos! It captures his spirit and personality. That's how I would want to remember my son's toddler years! I'm usually running after him and taking hundreds of pictures to get one good shot! Have you tried taking photos outside? It might be an interesting challenge!

    1. Thanks Bea. Yep, I photograph him outside all the time. It's much easier, all candid shots are in my opinion. I suppose that's why I choose to showcase more formal photos on my blog, as I find them more of a challenge.

  17. Thank you for joining in Photo Feedback again. I love seeing you here each week.
I love the expression you caught. It is so hard to photograph toddlers, let alone inside on a backdrop, so great job!
I think the top shot (the one you wanted feedback on) has a bit too much contrast added. This is mostly a personal preference, but I think it makes this shot look a tad noisy.
I love the lighting and the catch lights in his eyes. He is just such a handsome guy.

  22. The black and white works really well together, I think. I really like the way his mischievous boyness comes across in those two photos. Something about the lack of colour focuses attention on the emotion, I think.

  23. OH MY GOODNESS!!! I saw this on the papermama challenge and I love his expression! What a fun bottle of energy!

  24. He is such a cutie! It gets harder and harder as they get more and more mobile! And eventually, he might start to hate the camera....most kids go through that stage. Darn it!

  33. Aw, he is such a cutie! I love how you've captured him. (Visiting from photo feedback so I'll leave a short critique on your first image). Your composition and his expression are lovely. I might just watch for the lines intersecting his head. I love the b/w and don't really mind the grain as it lends a gritty feel with the tiles in back. I might light it with just a tiny bit less contrast. Beautiful shot though. Well done!!

  34. these are great! I really like the right picture in the second row, and I love the last one too! Awesome black and white processing!

  36. These are great! He's so expressive.

  37. Hi visiting from photo feedback at mom tried it. Love the expression and cropping on the first photo. I like how his eyes pop and I think this really works in black and white. Maybe it's just a tad too contrasty? I feel like you are losing a little bit of skin tone on his forehead and cheeks. Really great capture! :)

  38. Too cute for words! His sweet smile tells a million stories!

Thank you for linking up w/ Finagle a Foto!
